Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: The Graphic Novel

Title: Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: Graphic Novel
Adapted by: Tony Lee
Finished: April 9, 2011
Pages: 176
Published: 2010
Format: paperback

This series has quickly become one of my favorites and the Graphic Novel is no exception.

Following the book adaptation closely, the graphic novel version was especially fun to read (having already read the actual book) and being able to see the graphic interpretation and photos of the story. It definitely helps bring it to life even more.

If you enjoy the series, the adaptations, or graphic novels in general this one is a great one to check out!

REVIEW: Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters

Title: Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters
Author: Jane Austen & Ben Winters
Finished: March 26, 2011
Pages: 343
Published: 2009
Format: paperback & audio

I’ve had this one on the shelf for awhile but found it in audio at the library so I thought it might be fun to listen and read at the same time.

While generally the same romantic love story that we are used to, I felt this one encompassed it’s quirky side a little more than Pride & Prejudice & Zombies did. Right from the start there were signs of sea creatures, the ocean, boats and underwater cities.

Being my second favorite Austen story, I was able to easily follow and enjoy this tale just as much as its original.

The Dashwood sisters find themselves in a new home after the death of their father, leaving them nearly poor and their mother wondering if they will ever have the chance to marry fine young men. It doesn’t help when they are relocated to a mysterious island that begins to take a life of its own, in more ways than one.

Great adventure and story. Almost like reading a whole new book.

REVIEW: Mansfield Park

Title: Mansfield Park
Author: Jane Austen
Finished: December 20, 2010
Pages: 427
Published: 1814
Format: ebook

This was my last of the famous books by Jane Austen that everyone should read, and unfortunately it wasn’t my favorite of them. Mansfield Park is the story of Fanny Price, born to a poor family but raised by her rich relatives.

Like most novels of this time, it’s a coming of age story about a young woman in search of herself, her place in society, and while she may not know it, the perfect man to complete her. I feel like this story may have been the one least about romance and happy endings but more about the character of Fanny and her story.

It’s important for any Austen fan to read her complete works and I feel like there may come a time when I reread this story and have a better reaction and enjoy it more than I did this time around.

REVIEW: Dear Jane Austen

Title: Dear Jane Austen
Author: Patrice Hannon
Finished: January 3, 2010
Pages: 156
Published: 2005
Format: paperback

This tiny little book is a fun read. Author Patrice Hannon takes the form and prose of Jane Austen and current times to create a great advice book for women. “Readers” submit a letter to Jane Austen who replies taking examples out of her own text and the relationships of her characters. Each section incorporates something for each major Austen work, plus others.

The modern day letters incorporate mainly advice about love and relationships, sometimes friends, but often reflect something an Austen character has faced in the past – living together before marriage, marrying for money, fear of commitment, and how to gain a guys interested (among other things).

It was cute and easy to read, plus fun for any Austen fan.

REVIEW: Emma

Title: Emma
Author: Jane Austen
Finished: November 23, 2009
Pages: 449
Published: 1815
Format: Hardback

I have been a fan of Jane Austen for quite some time, with only a couple popular books left to read, I was excited for Emma, but after finishing I found it wasn’t as enjoyable as I had a imagined. I couldn’t keep my focus and half the time was confused as to the characters.

Emma is supposed to be a comedic novel about misinterpreted romance. Emma is spoiled and rich, not a care but herself, and Austen proclaimed prior to publishing that Emma was probably a  character most people would not enjoy, but herself.

The story covers the lives of many characters and involves Emma’s quest at matchmaking, unable to find love herself. Emma focuses her quest on her young friend Harriet, but when things don’t go as planned, Emma finds herself questioning the new match and the future.

I hope to re-read this again in the future, maybe after seeing the film, and having more of a connection with the story.
